Thermoplastic road marking paint, also known as hot-melt marking paint, is a solvent-free, 100% solid powder coating. Engineered for high-traffic environments, it transforms into a liquid state when heated to approximately 200°C (392°F) and fuses to the substrate to form a durable, thick polymer layer upon cooling.
Thermoplastic can be used very effectively for large anti-skid areas on roads and pedestrian walkways by adding glass beads. It can be produced in any color and is suitable for highways, urban roads, and pedestrian safety zones and many other areas. It hardens quickly and can be driven over after just a few minutes.
Rapid Setting Time: Hardens within minutes, allowing for immediate traffic reopening.
High Film Build: Unlike thin-film solvent paints, thermoplastics create a structured profile that enhances visibility and service life.
Advanced Skid Resistance: Modern formulations address historical “wheel slip” concerns by integrating anti-skid aggregates and specialized fillers to achieve high Skid Resistance Values (SRV), ensuring safety in wet and wintry conditions.
The performance of hot-melt coatings is dictated by the synergy of five core components:
The binder is the backbone of the formulation, providing thermoplasticity and adhesion.
Hydrocarbon Resins (C5): Offers excellent thermal stability and flow properties.
Rosin Esters (Maleic/Colophony based): Known for superior bonding to both asphalt and concrete surfaces and high resistance to oil/fuel drippings.
Titanium Dioxide (Rutile Type): The primary pigment for white markings, selected for its high refractive index and UV opacity.
Colorful Pigments: inorganic pigments mainly are chrome yellow series, molybdate red etc. More and more countries are having regulations on these products because of their lead content. For yellow and high-visibility markings, we utilize heat-stable organic pigments (e.g., Pigment Yellow 65/74/83/110). Our formulations are 100% lead-free and environmentally compliant.
To ensure night-time safety, glass beads (0.1mm to 1.4mm) are integrated into the mix (intermix) and dropped on the surface (drop-on).
Retroreflectivity: These spheres reflect vehicle headlights back to the driver.
Durability: Beyond optics, glass beads act as a structural reinforcement, protecting the resin matrix from mechanical abrasion.
Calcium carbonate and high-purity silica sand provide the mechanical “body.”
Mechanical Strength: Fillers dictate the compressive strength and wear resistance.
Flow Control: Precise particle size distribution prevents precipitation in the kettle and ensures smooth finish during extrusion or screed application.
Our proprietary additives enhance the chemical physical properties of the coating:
Plasticizers: Prevent cracking during freeze-thaw cycles.
Anti-Settling Agents: Ensure a homogeneous mix during high-temperature agitation.
UV Stabilizers: Protect the binder from oxidation and color fading under intense sunlight.
Due to its versatility and customizable color options, thermoplastic paint is ideal for:
Highway Lane Delineation (Long-line)
High-Friction Surface Treatments (Antiskid areas)
Urban Infrastructure: Crosswalks, car parks, and factory walkways.
Safety Markings: Speed humps and directional arrows.
